Documentation workshop
This wiki page is complemented by this discussion thread

There will be a Documentation workshop in Barcelona, where we will discuss the needs of user and developer documentation during a half day, and have a "docfest" to work on a specific wiki task for another half day.

Just now our minds are being boggled by questions on Maemo documentation. Things like: what kind of info is needed, by what kinds of users, how should it be structured so that everyone finds what they need, what's the easiest way for you to add information, questions, answers, etc? How can we get more and better info onto maemo.org, how can we get beginners up and running in the quickest way possible? What questions are boggling your mind? Where do you look for answers?

And most of all: how should Maemo documentation be produced in the future? How can we ensure that community participation in documentation writing and maintenance continues to be possible?

Join us to brainstorm on this important area!

In addition, we are asking people for short interviews on their exepriences with Maemo documentation throughout the weekend. This involves chocolate!

Schedule
; Friday 4th December
: Attend UX meets Code sessions, and find out expectations developers have of Maemo developer documentation
: Participate in discussions of UX documentation

; Saturday 5th December
: Morning:
: Brainstorming session, around the following core goal - how can we structure Maemo documentation and infrastructure to best facilitate work on Maemo? This question leads to others:
:* What do Maemo developers expect from documentation on maemo.org?
:* What do community documentation contributors expect from infrastructure?
:* What are the various roles of maemo.org and wiki.maemo.org?
:* How can we ensure that the Maemo wiki grows in a healthy way?
:* Should the focus of efforts be on writing new material or on cleaning up existing material?
:* What are the main places where newcomers look for information?
:* Where do more experienced Maemo community members go for information?

: Afternoon:
: Working session to improve some content in the wiki and on maemo.org.
:* Consolidate and improve FAQs
:* Improve navigation to wiki from maemo.org & within wiki
:* Work on maemo.org/intro as an introduction & filter page for new Maemo visitors
; Sunday 6th December
: Morning:
: Continue workshop from Saturday, or participate in UX meets Code workshop (to be decided)
Trainings Overview
Qt on Maemo Training: Qt is a cross-platform application framework from Nokia. It is the framework from KDE and will be the future of Maemo and all Nokia Symbian devices.
On this training we will cover both sides of Qt: the QWidget family and the QGraphicsView family (its canvas), besides some of the new Qt 4.6 API's.
The whole training will be fully hands-on, covered by examples, and in the end the audience will have 2hrs to develop their first Qt (fancy) application for Maemo, based on a preset of images, concepts and ideas from the openBossa designers.
Let's hack!

First steps to GTK (Hildon):

Introduction to GTK for C programmers, how to write a "Hello world" app, how to create a window, add some buttons, ... and how the GTK/Hildon toolkit works overall.
Agenda
Work in progress @ Agenda

UX meets Code
About 50 community developers and user experience professionals work together during 3 days. MORE

Documentation

In addition, we are asking people for short interviews on their experiences with Maemo documentation throughout the weekend. This involves chocolate!

Localization
Barcelona is a great place to discuss about localization, with a multilingual setting and an excellent track of free software L10n projects pushed by local communities.

Let's work towards the 2010 Objective Community localization.

If there is enough local interest we could organize practical L10n activities taking Catalan as a test case.

Llamada a las organizaciones locales
Hacemos una llamada a todas las organizaciones locales interesadas en software libre con un interés potencial en Maemo. Mozilla, GNOME, KDE, Hispalinux, Softcatalà, Debian, LUGs, CreativeCommons... Lista no exhaustiva.

Tenemos un modesto presupuesto para esponsorizar viaje y alojamiento de destacados desarrolladores o representantes de proyectos de software libre. Si te interesa regístrate y solicita esponsorización.

Sponsored participants
We have some budget to sponsor the travel and accommodation of selected maemo.org contributors. If you want to request sponsorship do it when registering.

Sponsored participants need to arrange their trip with the travel agency. You will receive the information in the email with the sponsorship approval.
Although HIG is not a guide about migrating a desktop application to its mobile version, this section talks a little about this because often people think about desktop applications when designing interfaces for mobile devices. This leads to common mistakes that compromise the usability of an application. With a limited working area, mobile devices' screens cannot support all the types of widgets that a desktop computer application normally supports.

When developing an application for a mobile device, you must not think of it as a direct translation of one platform to another but rather as an adaption of ways to accomplish the same tasks. Cases that express this adaption are present all over this document but this section takes a special look at them.

By following the principles covered in this section, your application will end up simpler to use and easier to learn.

Divide and Conquer
Divide the content to simplify the interface but still have full functionality in a Hildon application. The limited screen size makes it difficult to include and use a large number of controls on the screen at the same time, so, the solution is not to have them together.

For example, consider an email client application that usually has a split view containing on one side a tree view with a list of accounts and respective folders and on the other side a view of a list of messages within the currently selected folder. This is obviously too much for a small size screen and the solution is to divide the contents. So, the first view should display the available accounts for the user to choose one. After the account is chosen, a new view should display the different folders ("Inbox", "Outbox", "Drafts", etc.). Choosing a folder brings up a new view with the list of messages in it.

Keep in mind that the division must be well balanced in the way that things must not be divided to a point where the user needs to navigate a number of views to do obvious things. For example, in the list of messages in the "Inbox" it is likely that next steps for the user are to open a message, delete a message, or create a new one. Hence, a button "Create Message" can be added to the same view where the message list is.

Do Not Repeat Yourself
Several desktop applications have repeated functionality for many tasks. For example, you can edit a message from a message list by using the Edit menu from the menubar, by using the popup menu from the mouse right button or even by using the toolbar. In Hildon, in order to simplify and save space for the sake of usability, a task must not be repeated. If the user can create a new message by pressing a button in the interface, then do not add a "Create New Message" menu item.

View Menu
The View Menu does not have a traditional menu bar like desktop application menus have. The user activates the View Menu by pressing the application's title area.

The View Menu can hold up to ten menu items and can be divided into two columns -- or one column when in portrait orientation. The View Menu can also include filters. As with selectable items within window views, menu items are in fact buttons, and have no submenus.

Figure 8: A view menu

Place menu items that perform similar actions ("Previous" and "Next", for example) side by side within a View Menu, and place the most important menu items on the top of the view.

Do not repeat actions that are available from other locations within the application (either in the onscreen interface or via a hardware key) in a menu view.

The View Menu must differ depending on the current view in the application. For example, if users are viewing the "Inbox" subview of an email application, they should access the view menu of the "Inbox" and not the view menu of the root view.

What if more menus are needed?
Follow the principles stated in section 1.8, "Hildonizing an Interface," to keep the interface simple yet functional.

Avoid any use of submenus beyond what fits in the 10 menu item slots in the View menu. Even just removing those menu commands that do not fit, should be considered.

The fallback way to support additional menu items (in corner cases) is to have an menu item in the view menu that opens a dialog. That dialog has the action area removed, and contains a dialog wide grid of command buttons in two columns. Visually this is quite similar to the view menu itself.

The less menu items, the better. This is important not only because there are a limited number of items allowed within Hildon, but also because it is good practice to limit the amount of menu items a user is forced to navigate through to achieve a particular action. Again, if some other widget can perform an action within the application's interface, do not include a menu item for it.

Filters
Along with typical menu items, you can also use filters within a View Menu. Filters are toggle buttons that can be used for presentation/sorting purposes. For example, sorting a list of contacts alphabetically, or changing the size of icons in a list.

As a general rule, these actions should not change the amount of data displayed, just how that data is displayed.

Always present filters in groups. There should always be at least two menu filters (for example, a menu filter that sorts a list of email messages alphabetically and one that sorts them by date -- not just one filter for alphabetical sorting).

Menu Keyboard Shortcuts
Sometimes it makes sense to add keyboard shortcuts to some actions that can also be performed via the View Menu.

If the shortcut performs a common action like creating something new, formatting the text as bold, or undoing a previous action, take care in utilizing common shortcuts that are generally used in other applications. For example, the previous mentioned actions are Ctrl+n, Ctrl+b, and Ctrl+z, respectively.

Unavailable Menu Items
Even though it is a common and useful practice in desktop applications to make certain menu items unavailable (for example, "dimmed"), when their actions are not available, Hildon takes a different approach: the menu items must not be visible at all. Although dimmed menu items suggest actions that are unavailable, they can cramp menu space on the small screen and make interaction with available menu items more confusing.
