Installation
These tools can be installed in the device by activating the Fremantle tools repository in the Application manager. The tools are command line utilities, so they will not add applications to the application manager list of downloadable applications. This also means that the tools need to be installed from the X terminal as root. Developers can also install them in Scratchbox using the command line interface.

To activate the tools repository with the Application Manager,
<s>http://mg.pov.lt/770/tools-repository.install (does not work in PR 1.2 - please fix)</s> open this single-click_2_install-3 file, or manually create a new catalogue like this:

# Navigate to the application menu in the Application Manager (tap the title bar)
# Select ‘Application catalogs’
# Select ‘New’
# Enter a catalog name of ‘fremantle tools’
# Enter a web address of http://repository.maemo.org
# Enter a distribution of ‘fremantle/tools’
# Enter components of ‘free non-free’
# Make sure that ‘Disabled:’ is left unchecked
# Select ‘Save’

If you prefer to edit configuration files yourself instead of using the Application manager, add these lines to your
/etc/apt/sources.list

# fremantle tools
deb http://repository.maemo.org fremantle/tools free non-free
# fremantle tools sources
deb-src http://repository.maemo.org fremantle/tools free non-free

To install a binary package in Scratchbox:

$ fakeroot apt-get install <bin pkg name>

To install a binary package to the device (as root):

$ apt-get install <bin pkg name>

To install a source package in Scratchbox or to the device:

$ apt-get source <src pkg name>

122.102.45.251: /* References */

Introduction
Ubiboot is a boot manager for N9(50) devices. Using the example configuration it is fairly easy to hexa-boot the device between Harmattan/Nitdroid/Nemo/Firefox/Ubuntu/Sailfish Operating Systems, and change kernels at will.

Ubiboot is mainly aimed at developers and advanced users, so be warned. The procedures in this guide require understanding of the structure of an *nix filesystem and knowledge to work on a shell prompt (i.e. Terminal/Command Line).

Benefits of Ubiboot N9
# You can have multiple boot Operating Systems, each with multiple optional kernels on the device.
# Selecting the boot kernel is quick and easy with the graphical touchscreen menus.
# You will not need to flash the device to install and test a new kernel, just copying the kernel and modules to the device is enough.
# You have integrated repair/maintanance mode on the device, where you can export all partitions for backup/restore to a PC automatically.
# You can telnet and ssh to the device in maintanance mode, to do any desired repair operations. You can transfer backup archives to / from the device via sftp

Prerequisites
To ensure that most of your efforts are focused on actual Ubiboot installation/setting up of a Hex Boot system, please make sure to fulfill the following prerequisites:

Flash the device (for a fresh start/clean state)
TIP: The sequence of flashing commands below combines the usual flashing steps found in the N9 Flashing Wiki, plus actual flashing of the Open-Mode Kernel so that upon first boot, the device will already be in "Open-Mode". This is called Back-to-Back Closedmode/Openmode flashing. If you follow this style of flashing the device, you will no longer need to delete some folders (.accounts/, ./aegis, and ./activesync) for the device to store passwords correctly. The additional benefits of the Back-to-Back flashing is that you get rid of a lot of unstability in the device caused by some parts still being accessed with closed-mode aegis keys.

TIP: If you want to be rid of the "Scary Warranty Warning", which a device displays when booting in Open Mode you have to remove that Before entering open mode.

Flash your device with rootfs, omit the parameter "-R" (which means "reboot")

sudo flasher -F <yourmainfirmware.bin> -f

or

sudo flasher -F <yourmainfirmware.bin> -F <youremmc.bin> -f

or "Zeroize Method" of flashing, which "wipes" user data and EMMC. Note that this command flashes the eMMC twice and takes many hours to complete the process. You will see a notification/warning of eMMC "unnecessarily being flashed twice") in the Terminal when flashing via this method.

sudo flasher -f -F <yourmainfirmware.bin> --erase-user-data=secure -F <youremmc.bin> --erase-mmc=secure

Next, take care to directly flash the open mode kernel (do NOT boot up, nor pull USB cable, do not wait too long) with

sudo flasher -a <yourmainfirmware.bin> -k zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix --flash-only=kernel -f -R

--peterleinchen 16:27, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

When Not Starting From A Fresh Flash
# Open Terminal on the device.
# Type the following commands and press Enter after typing each command (NOTE: this will delete all configured Accounts):
disclaimer-cal remove View-openmode
rm -rf /home/user/.accounts/
rm -rf /home/user/.aegis/
rm -rf /home/user/.activesync/

Shut down the device, plug to a USB cable and to a computer, and proceed with flashing the Open-Mode kernel as mentioned above:

sudo flasher -a <yourmainfirmware.bin> -k zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix --flash-only=kernel -f -R

Upon first boot, you may set up your Accounts (email, social media accounts, i.e. Facebook etc.) once again.

# In MS Windows, just omit the word “sudo” from the command.
# In MS Windows, the “zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix” file needs to be in the same location as the Flasher Application, FIASCO, and eMMC images. Usually you would have installed the Flasher Application to C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher.
# For Linux users, usual “best practice” is to save the FIASCO, eMMC, and whatever Kernels at the main directory (/home/yourusername).
# "Device Lock Request" should be disabled when you are using Open-Mode.
# preinits.tar: this is a compressed file, like Zip (Windows users: use 7zip application). We will extract this later on once this is copied to the device.
# zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix: this is used for flashing your device to “Open-Mode” (Windows users: save this in the same location as your flasher application and files...usually C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher).
# zImage-2.6.32.54-dfl61-20121301 from http://maemo.cloud-7.de/HARM/N9/1.3/openmode-kernel/: this is the “default” or “plain Open-Mode” kernel. Including this to your ubiboot-02 setup is optional.
# http://www.swagman.org/juice/ubiboot/ubiboot-02/ubiboot-02_0.3.5_301013.tar or http://juiceme.cloud-7.de/ubiboot/ubiboot-02/ubiboot-02_0.3.5_301013.tar: this is the latest ubiboot archive (v.0.3.5) that contains the files needed for ubiboot. TAR file is a compressed file, like ZIP. After downloading, extract the contents of this file (Windows users: use 7zip application). This compressed file contains 3 files and a checksum file.
## ubiboot.conf this is the configuration file that contains all the changeable options and tunables for your boot, including the list of bootable OS'es and kernels. You need to copy this into MyDocs/boot/ directory of your device.
## ubiboot-02.menus.cpio: this is the kernel extension file which contains the graphical menu system presented to user on boot. You need to copy this into MyDocs/boot/ directory of your device.
## zImage_2.6.32.54-ubiboot-02_301013: This is the ubiboot kernel that you need to flash to your device. (Windows users: save this in the same location as your flasher application and files, usually C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher).

You should create the boot folder inside MyDocs before copying the ubiboot.conf and ubiboot-02.menus.cpio to the device.
Prepare the Device
Enable Developer Mode and Installation of non-store sources
# Enable “Allow installations from non-store sources (Settings → Applications → Installations).
# Enable “Developer Mode” (Setitngs → Security → Developer mode)...your device will restart. Upon restart, you will now see Terminal being available for use.

Install and Prepare Filebox and Filebox Root
# Install Filebox from Nokia Store on your device.
# Install N9 Quick Tweak. Upon installation, run N9 Quick Tweak and enable “Root Filebox” (as of the latest version, this is under Tweak H.
# You should now have Filebox Root. Open Filebox Root and navigate to “MyDocs” (usually at first use of Filebox, you are already at “MyDocs”) and create a new folder called “boot” (without the quotes).
# In the “Settings” (the gear icon at the lower-right), enable the following:
#* Show root filesystem
#* Show hidden filesystem
#* Show thumbnails

Moving files using Filebox Root
This section guides you on where to move/copy the files that were downloaded in the Download Needed Files section above.

Place/move/copy the following files inside the newly-created “boot” folder under “MyDocs”:

ubiboot.conf
ubiboot-02.menus.cpio

Next is to move the "zImage..." files.

# Go up three (3) levels by pressing the “up” arrow (found at the lower-left of Filebox Root) . You should be at the “root” folder (you can confirm this when you see that the blue banner at the top of Filebox Root shows only a forward-slash “/”).
# Find the “/boot” folder...we are looking for the "/boot" under root directory, not the “/home/user/MyDocs/boot” folder (i.e. that we created inside “MyDocs”) and go inside that folder.
# Paste the three (or four) "zImage..." files:

zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix
zImage.pr13
zImage
zImage-2.6.32.54-dfl61-20121301 (Optional)

REVIEW/RECAP: These are the locations where the "needed files" are to be moved/pasted/located.

/home/user/MyDocs should contain:
preinits.tar
nitdroid_n9_jellybean_alpha5.tar.bz2
apps2sd_fix_alpha5.tar.bz2
b2g_n9_droid_hal_fs.tar.gz
/home/user/MyDocs/boot should contain:
ubiboot.conf
ubiboot-02.menus.cpio
/boot should contain:
zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix
zImage.pr13
zImage (which by now, has been renamed to “zImage_e-yes_nitdroid+l2fix”, without the quotes)
zImage-2.6.32.54-dfl61-20121301 (Optional)

Extract preinits.tar, the NITDroid and the FirefoxOS files
NOTE: Terminal should still be open at this point.

Type the following commands in the Terminal and press Enter after typing each command (NOTE: do not change the order of the commands):

devel-su (default password is "rootme", without quotes)
mkdir /home/nitdroid (creates the “nitdroid” directory under the /home directory)
cd /home/user/MyDocs (navigates to the directory where the NITDroid image is located)
tar -xvf preinits.tar -C / (extracts preinits to /sbin directory of the device)
tar xvzf b2g_n9_droid_hal_fs.tar.gz -C /home/firefox_os (extracts the FirefoxOS image to /home/firefox_os)

Install Nemo Mobile OS
In Linux, enter the following commands as per the Nemo Wiki Page:

wget -r -l1 -nd --no-parent -Amoslo-0.*.rpm http://releases.nemomobile.org/snapshots/repos/hw/ti/omap3/n950-n9/latest/armv7hl/armv7hl/
rpm2cpio moslo-*.armv7hl.rpm | cpio -vidu
sudo flasher -k usr/share/moslo/zImage-moslo -n usr/share/moslo/initrd-moslo -l -b

Alternative: for the "wget" command above, you may download the MOSLO directly as I have mentioned in the “Download Needed Files” section above. Then you may proceed with the second and third commands.

MS Windows users: you can install 7-Zip and use that to go inside the moslo-0.0.13.2-1.5.Nemo.Adaptation.N9xx.armv7hl.rpm file. Keep going one directory deeper until you find two files:

* initrd-moslo
* zImage-moslo

Next, extract those files and place them in the same directory as the Flasher application. Once done, the command will be now modified as follows:

flasher.exe -k zImage-moslo -n initrd-moslo -l -b

# The Terminal will give you a message that it is waiting for a suitable USB device. Make sure your device is turned off and plug it to your computer via the USB cable. The flashing procedure should finish in a few seconds.
# Keep the device plugged. What happens next is that the N9 is being repartitioned for Nemo (on the device, you will see some green text/writing on the screen; just wait for it to finish) , you'll see the led blinking for 10min or so.
# You will also notice that the File Manager of your Linux Distribution will open and will show a folder named “Alt_OS”. This is the newly-created partition.
# Next, we will extract the Nemo image into the newly-created partition. Enter this command in the Terminal (for Linux only):

sudo tar --numeric-owner -xf nemo-handset-armv7hl-n950-*.tar.bz2 -C /media/Alt_OS/

Now, unplug the device from the USB Cable. The screen should tell you to "push Volume Up" to boot into Harmattan, or "push Volume Down" to boot into Nemo.

TIPS:

# Sometimes, the name of the partition is Alt_OS_, with a single underline/underscores after “S” instead of the default Alt_OS (without underscore). Sometimes it has two (2) underlines/underscores. In my case, it had three (3) underlines/underscores.
# Sometimes, the path of the Alt_OS partition is /media/yourusername/Alt_OS.
# To be sure, before extracting the Nemo image, you may want to check the correct name by entering the Linux command of “lsblk” (without the quotes).
# As a matter of “best practice” it is recommended to have a File Manager open and navigating to "Alt_OS" during the extraction command to verify that the files are being extracted to the correct location.
# By experience, booting the device at this stage will result to either a reboot loop or the device not turning on at all. Sometimes, upon unplugging of the USB cable as mentioned above and selecting "Volume Down" to boot into Nemo, nothing happens (device is unresponsive and stays black). It is highly recommend not to turn on the device until you complete the setup/process from this point onward.

Flash the Device with Ubiboot-02
NOTE: for this step, the device should be turned off.

Flash the ubiboot-02 Kernel with the command below. Replace <yourmainfirmware.bin> with the filename of your N9 FIASCO image if you have renamed it differently.

sudo flasher -a <yourmainfirmware.bin> -k zImage_2.6.32.54-ubiboot-02_301013 --flash-only=kernel -f -R

Once the device reboots, keep the USB cable plugged in to enter “maintenance mode”. You will notice that the File Manager of your Linux Distribution will open and will mount/show all the partitions:

Nokia N9 (this is the “MyDocs” directory)
rootfs (this is the “/” directory or partition of the Nokia N9's Harmattan OS)
another partition with a long series of alpha-numeric (this is the /home/nitdroid directory/partition)
Alt_OS (this is the Nemo directory/partition)

Double-check that the files we have moved earlier are in their correct places. Once confirmed, you can "eject" all the partitions from your File Manager. Unplug the USB Cable and the device will restart. When it restarts, you should now see the Ubiboot menu.

Congratulations, you now have Ubiboot completely set up with a Triple-Boot configuration of Harmattan, NITDroid, and Nemo!

Known Issues
This section attempts to document some user-reported issues and solutions with respect to Ubiboot usage, installation, etc.

Charging
Ubiboot handles rtc and usb events to boot up device from power off state:

a) to Ubiboot telnet console (when connected to PC USB), device will not be charged.

b) to configured default kernel (harmattan) to charge (when connected to wall charger).

c) to configured default kernel (harmattan) to trigger alarm.

"Case a" works flawlessly.

"Case b" sometimes does not work, but reboots and then starts up Ubiboot console/screen (not charging).

"Case c" needs some precondition. Make sure you have shutdown your device from Harmattan. Otherwise the alarm may not be triggered in NITDroid or will not be triggered in Nemo.

Alarm Clocks
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1355247&postcount=374
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1355278&postcount=377

The default behavior of the device, particularly with the default OS (Harmattan), is that clock alarms can be triggered even when the device is turned off. The posts above suggest that you need to ensure that the "last OS booted" should be Harmattan prior to turning the device off, because between Harmattan, NITDroid, and Nemo, the alarm clock system behavior of Harmattan is most stable. Based on the above posts linked, alarms of NITDroid and Nemo (when the device is turned off) don't behave as good as Harmattan does.
However this seller doesn't appear to be active (as of June 2010).
I have this case for my N900 (PDair vertical pouch with belt clip). The quality of the outer leather and stitching is very good, but the inner faces where the phone slides in seems to be vinyl rather than soft leather or suede. The tension on the phone body seems just right, neither too tight nor too loose. The case is possibly just a couple of millimetres too shallow to protect the N900 at the open end , but that might be just a little picky! A nice case, but not the ultimate, I'm still looking for better.

* Tradition leather case for N900 - by Noreve
* Black Leather Vertical Flip Carry Case Cover Pouch For Nokia N900 - by AAJ Trading

Ive tried this case from Amazon, this does not fit the N900 well, or maybe its just my case.
Secondly there is transparent plastic strip which holds the N900 in place and it covers the bottom 1/3 of the screen, moving the stylus over it or even doing a slide motion is obstructive. This is my personal opinion, please feel free to correct this post if somebody had a good experience with this.

This is correct, my N900 will not even fit inside this case, the plastic part that covers the bottom will break if I try to push more than 1cm of the phone in. This is a very bad case which is a shame as it looks nice when closed up.

<strike>I agree, the AAJ Trading flip case is useless. I can't get my phone in and if I did it would cover up the USB port and also not allow the use of the keyboard.</strike> After looking at some of the pictures of other cases I see I was trying to use it wrong. The clear plastic goes over the keyboard not the screen. They it goes in okay. You still can't charge it in the case but at least it is possible to get it in and out quite easily. This case is acceptable now.

* Noreve Authentic Leather Case - Ambition Leather Flip Case
It's a beautiful leather case amde from authentic leather. The flip opens to unveil the camera lens at the back of the device. Check out the images to understand what I mean.
- Bad points first - it's expensive, and a little bulky. On the other hand it's extremely well made and a perfect fit for the N900. Very tough, and great protection for your phone. A suede pad behind a stiff leather panel protects the screen. I've had mine since they went on sale (8 months or so) and despite bouncing around a workshop and a muddy 4x4 it still looks like new.
The switch does the mandatory D+/- shorting according to USB charging specs, so it's a great alternative for those reluctant to do a simple cable hack, to make all those random chargers out there work with N900
Batteries
Internal batteries
Official Nokia battery
* The standard internal battery included with the Nokia N900 is the 3.7 V 1320 mAh Nokia BL-5J providing a total of 4.9 Wh of power.

Extended batteries
* The Mugen Power HLI-N900XL is a 3.7 V, 2400 mAh after-market replacement battery designed for the N900, providing 8.88 Wh of power at the cost of replacing the back cover and increasing the thickness of the phone by 7 mm. It is reviewed here.

* The High Capacity 1500mAh BL-5J Battery for Nokia Cell Phone is a 3.6 V 1500 mAh battery that fits inside the N900 like a BL-5J. Have ordered two of these from Hong Kong and will update you if they are any good.

* According to an extensive thread where several types of aftermarket batteries were tested, the most powerful direct substitute of the stock Nokia battery so far (June 2011) is the 1420 mAH blue Scud battery, which performed better than its own claim, showing a real 1510 mAh capacity. This thread also discusses making a double cell battery and fitting the phone with a Mugen extended battery cover for ~3000mAh.

* In update, as of Sep 2012 the best replacement BL-5J battery is the PolarCell replacement. It's easily available in Europe and has a better capacity than the best (1420mAh) blue scud.

External batteries
Warning: many external power packs are reported not to work well or not to work at all with the Nokia N900. There are two principal reasons for this:

# The N900 uses a strict implementation of the USB specifications, which means you need a dumb charger (or a cable) that adheres to the spec. (However see "about D+/- short" on this page)
# The N900's internal battery holds 4.9 Wh of power, so charging it fully from a charger based on one or two 1.2V 1800m Ah AA rechargeable cells (totalling 2.16 to 4.32 Wh of power) is simply not possible and never will be.

Therefore, this section lists only external batteries that are explicitly marketed as being compatible with the N900 or are confirmed as such by multiple reviews.

* The Nokia Extra Power DC-11 is a 3.7V 1500mAh external battery pack, providing an additional 5.55Wh of power. It is marketed by Nokia as being compatible with the N900. However, users report that while it can top up the N900's battery, the DC-11 is not capable of recharging it from flat.
* The Proporta USB Turbocharger 3400 is reported to work well with the N900 both in this review and also here. It holds a 3.7 V, 3400 mAh external power pack (providing an additional 12.58 Wh of power) and provides a charging current of 700 mA at 5.5 V (3.85 W). Note that the basic version does not come with a mains adapter and so it charges only via USB. The Proporta USB Turbocharger 3400 World Pack is the same device with the addition of a worldwide mains USB charger and a car charger. This increases your charging options, but be aware that it will not increase the charging speed. I just charged mine after receiving it yesterday (2012-09-06), and it is NOT charging my N900. - npsimons UPDATE: Using the slow plugin method seems to work; I don't have a cable with shorted data pins to test as well, but likely that would work too.
* There are multiple reports of the Energizer XP2000 working with the Nokia N900: 12
* There are multiple reports of the Yoobao Long March Dual Port 11.2Ah working with the N900, however it seems only one port (1A) will charge the N900.

Gaming
* Game-gripper gaming controller for Europe and the rest of the world.

Memory Cards
The device
The N900 has a memory card expansion slot, which can be accessed by removing the back cover. It is next to the camera lens. This is not to be confused with the SIM slot, which is under the battery, because they are not dis-similar in size. In the device's standard configuration, it does not need to be turned off while inserting or removing a memory card. Using such a card will increase available storage which can be very useful when running other OSs, such as nitdroid.

Compatability of cards
The N900 supports micro SDHC cards, it does not offically support micro SDXC cards.

Although there have been several confirmed reports of working Sandisk 64GB microSDXC cards. However these may not work in there supplied format.

micro SD memory cards are available in range of sizes/capacities (GB), data transfer speeds (class) and types. When the N900 was released, the maximum capcity micro SD cards was 16GB (now commonly available).

The fastest cards available in SDHC format are UHS-1 (Jun 2011), there is some suggestion that these can work in the device (TBC) but there are confirmed reports of a number class 10 cards working well.

Maintenance
Memory cards are fragile and should be treated with the same care as any electrical device with exposed terminals.

Memory cards of this type are designed to be easy to remove and insert. However, in order to achieve an optimal lifespan, cards should be taken out of and put back into the device as little as possible. Continual extraction and replacement will cause wear to the contacts, of both the card and device.

Cards that present as malfunctioning often do so because of damaged contacts. Eroded contacts can be repaired, using a little contact spray. In order to clean the device contacts, put a litlle cleaner on a card's contacts and insert into the device before the cleaner dries; repeat if necessary.

Cards available
Unfortunately, not all cards are equal. Some perform as advertised, while others have less storage and/or are slower than advertised. This is particularly so with higher capacities and speeds. Furthermore, unbranded or unexpectedly inexpensive cards should be treated with extreme caution.

The tables below are results of experiences using the N900 with the each card.
The content of the table (1) is a collation of user comments and is intended as a guide to other N900 users of what works, rather than a definitive list of which cards to buy. Many of the cards will be available in regions additional to those reported thus far. Table (2) lists any problems found when using some cards with the N900. Because card-use is very varied, it might be that a given card (size, speed & brand) will appear in both tables.

Single digit values for Capacity & Speed have been prefixed by '0' so the table sorts properly.

Car Chargers
Discussion revealed that some early or generic car lighter to USB adapters will not charge the N900 without modification. The charger must conform to a 1998 USB charger standard. If in doubt, check the product specifications to confirm that it is compatible with the N900.

Also, there are reports that high power consumption usage in the car, such as operating the transmitter, media player, GPS, etc. simultaneously, can consume more power than a basic car charger can simultaneously supply. If such usage is expected, a higher-output charger would be more effective.
Inductive Chargers
Now available are universal add on home and car chargers. The one tested required modification to short the data pins and was a tight fit under a Mugen cover when used with a double-Scud battery. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1431701 These universal Qi charge receiver pads fit in over the battery under the cover, others have adhesive to stick to the back of the phone, they have a ribbon cable which extends out, and they plug the USB port nearly flush like a protective dust cover. This system protects the USB port from dust and falls, if they have the data pins shorted from the factory or by modification they integrate with the standard N900 battery monitoring programs like a normal USB charger, they are easily and safely removable while the N900 is running without removing the battery cover for host mode, mass storage, or data/tethering modes.
The correct universal charge receiver is the center port, B type microUSB plug, upward facing port. With care the ribbon cable will not be visible through the camera window.
